Last Sunday, the Bangers hosted the Buccaneer Rugby Club from Australia in a social match before they returned to their homeland. The Buccaneers, a club of Australian military veterans, loosely headquartered in Nowra. NSW, were in Thailand to play in the Cris Kay’s Memorial Tens in Pattaya a week ago.
The game emphasized all that is good about rugby. Scrambling for numbers, the Buccaneers imported a squad of younger players from the Pattaya Panthers. The Bangers thought that was good idea, so invited a few players for the Bangkok Japanese to boost their squad also.
Surprisingly, for a social match, the game was played at a fast and furious pace. It was only with a good deal of effort and resourcefulness that the Bangers managed to get out in front, late in the second stanza. The score was unimportant, with all the players joining into the spirit of the occasion. The post match drinks at the Red & White went on late into evening.
