To say the day was full of adventure would be an understatement as the twenty nine Ancients arrived at the Royal Thai Police Stadium last Sunday morning. They were scheduled to play an exhibition match at the Bangkok International Sevens The Ancients knew a lot was riding on their performance. The Banger Colts unfortunately, had to withdraw from the tournament at the last moment. The tournament organizer was not very happy man. The Ancients wanted to restore some Banger mana.
No need for sentimental stuff. It was a fantastic performance all round by the Ancients with teams displayed skills long lost in the modern game. There was no shouting, swearing or blaming each other for mistakes. This was very happy bunch of rugby men in their golden years having their moment in the sun.
Of course it helped that the referee was blind and had scant regard for his whistle. He was wheeled on to the field of dreams in a hospital wheelchair. His authority over the match went down hill from here.
Sure there were forward passes, knock ons, above the shoulder tackles, off sides and shepherding but no one seem to care. These rugby aristocrats were not going to let the International Rugby Board rules spoil their day.
The post game beers went on for hours. As it should. Final Score : Ancients Blue 5. Ancients Red 5
